[bullet] As a TEARA member, you have many benefits. Most are operational, however, there are a few that constitute a monetary savings.

[bullet] MONETARY:

  • 1- To you, the TEARA member, TEARA offers a significant first time ARRL membership discount. If you are not an ARRL member (either never been a member OR are not a current member), the club offers you a discount on membership fees. You get a $5 savings on ARRL dues. If you are a current ARRL member, you save $2 on renewal. The ARRL is an organization that works for the Radio Amateur’s rights. A couple of examples of their recent work on behalf of Amateur Radio is the addition of 10 meter phone privileges to Novice class Amateur license holders in 1987 and the advent of the code-less Technician class license in 1991!

  • 2- Tables are often provided at area hamfests for members to sell/swap their gear. TEARA will purchase a club table(s) as needed by the membership at any NC hamfests that the membership is interested in participating in.

  • 3- Discounts on equipment purchased by the club for club projects. A good example was the 440 commercial conversion project. Club members purchased Motorola Micors from the club for $15 each (!!) to convert to 440 amateur use. These radios usually go for $60 (hamfest price) and up commercially. The club purchased a large quantity for its members and passed these along at cost.

  • 1- Club repeaters with reverse phone patches, speed dial numbers, time of day announcements, instant drop and PL encode features for cross-band operation and maximum utilization during band openings, a newly emerging linking system that will enable communications over a much greater range and allow operation on other bands that you may not be equipped for.

  • 2- Monthly club meetings with interesting programs and lots of helpful information.

  • 3- Club projects like: antenna building parties, commercial radio conversions to get the members on 440 mhz, 6 meters, etc.

  • 4- Weekly net to provide members with up-to-the-minute information on club affairs and area activities.

  • 5- Annual field day exercise. This 24 hour non-stop activity is an event that is fondly remembered by all who participate. Cookouts, antenna building, emergency station installation, etc. are commonplace events at TEARA field day.

  • 6- All club members receive a monthly TEARA newsletter (either via the internet, packet radio, or U.S.Mail). This is used as a media to convey club related information to members only. It also keeps the membership up to date with the “tinkerins” of others in the group. From time to time, it contains the club membership roster, speed dial codes for various members, new repeater user codes as they change, local area events (hamfests, etc.), and other misc. information.

  • 7- Regular ham radio classes. These are held routinely to help train and license area individuals. Many members have used this as a method to train and license family members.

  • 8- ARRL coordinated Amateur Radio test sessions. TEARA holds monthly ARRL test sessions for all classes of Amateur Radio Licenses. Many members either took their initial exams through TEARA or have upgraded to a higher class of license via the monthly TEARA test sessions.

  • 9- Fox Hunts. TEARA holds regular fox hunts to develop DF (Directional Finding) skills. It also serves to train hams on the development of saturation and non-saturation directional antenna systems. These are held on weekends and are fun for ham and non-ham participants alike, as this is a receiving skill developer.

  • 10- CW practice. Based on membership requirements, TEARA holds CW practice sessions on the linked repeater system. This helps members learn basic CW or build CW speed for license upgrades.
