USING THE PHONE PATCH

[bullet] Phone patches are an interesting and important facet of repeater operations. They are relatively easy to use, especially with speed dial numbers (available to members...reference the section named “Speed Dials and their use”).

[bullet] Refer to the chapter in your handbook that contains the operator codes for the repeater that you’re interested in using. Some of our repeaters have patches and some don’t. As time passes and our system grows, more of our machines will most likely include phone patches. This info will be printed in your newsletters. Don’t forget to remove this info from your newsletter and install it in your handbook.

[bullet] There is a section in your manual named repeater operating procedures. In that article there is a section about general autopatch operation. Read this and familiarize yourself with our repeater autopatch codes (where applicable). The procedures outlined in the article are relatively universal on all repeaters.

[bullet] Repeater codes for accessing and terminating autopatch calls vary from machine to machine. This is due to the wide variety of computerized controllers and the need to eliminate interference between repeaters.

[bullet] Always listen a moment and/or ask if the frequency is in use before beginning a phone patch. Key the repeater and identify yourself BEFORE beginning a call. Unkey and listen a moment or two to make sure that the repeater isn’t beginning to identify. Next press the appropriate keys to activate the patch and make your call. All patch calls have a 3 minute limit, and can be extended by a member (on some repeaters) if necessary by entering the correct code near the 3 minute mark.. Hang up the call by entering the patch terminate code, identify yourself, and say “patch clear”. That’s it! If you don’t feel comfortable with the patch operation, contact another member and have them explain more clearly.
