The Triangle East Amateur Radio Association

(TEARA) holds monthly amateur radio exams In Smithfield NC. Exams are given at the Red Cross offices in Smithfield, North Carolina. The Red Cross is located at 801 South Third Street in downtown Smithfield. For updates as to the location of the test session for any given month, you should contact either Norman Young or Tom Lewis. (See below.) The tests are on the 3rd Saturday of each month (with the exception of July and December, where there are no tests scheduled). There is no pre-registration requirement, and test registration begins at 9:30 A.M. sharp. 605 forms are supplied, and the test fee for 2006 is $14.00.

If you currently have a valid amateur license, you will need to bring your license and a photocopy. You will also need a picture I.D, such as a driver license, school, work, or military I.D., or D.M.V. issued I.D. card. If you are under 18, the team will also accept your photograph in your school yearbook as a picture I.D.

Morse code tests are administered using the fill in the blank format or one minute of solid copy. Copying of dots and dashes on the exam paper, followed by translation after the exam will NOT be permitted.

The VE team will make every effort to accommodate persons with special needs, such as visually impaired testing. However, you are encouraged to contact either of the two VE team liaisons well in advance to advise us of any special needs you may have.

The schedule for the year of 2006 is as follows: January 21, February 18, March 18, April 15, May 20, June 17, August 19, September 16, October 21, November 18. Again, you'll notice there are no tests scheduled for the months of July or December.

To reach the Red Cross traveling from the west or east, take U.S. 70 Business into downtown Smithfield. (U.S. 70 Business is Market Street.) Look for the intersection with U.S. 301. If coming from the west, turn right, or if from the east, turn left onto U.S. 301 South. Go to the next stoplight (Brogden Road - about 1/2 mile) and turn right. Go one block and turn right onto Third Street. The Red Cross will be on your right.

If you are coming from the north or south on I 95, take Exit 95 onto U.S. 70 Business West into downtown Smithfield to the intersection with U.S. 301. Turn onto U.S. 301 South and follow the directions in the paragraph above.

If you are coming from the north on U.S. 301, look for the intersection with U.S. 70 Business and follow the same directions given above.

If you are coming from the south on U.S. 301, turn left at the Brogden Road intersection south of downtown Smithfield and follow the directions above.

Finally, if you successfully upgrade and would like to donate your study guide, tapes or software to TEARA, we will gladly accept the donation to use in an upcoming radio class or to pass on to a young prospective ham.

Talk-in is on the following repeaters (they are linked full time): 147.39+ PL 88.5 in Clayton, and 442.400+ in Zebulon. Further information can usually be obtained on these repeaters or drop a note to the VE Team Liaisons listed above.
